Asa Sushi

It's another nice sunny sunday. One of the best places to spend a sunny day is Kerrisdale, so EU and I decided to have our lunch there. And since I'm channeling some Japanese these days (again), we decided to have sushi for lunch! Sushi and Kerrisdale? The first restaurant that came to mind was...

  • Dine in/Take out
  • Free delivery with minimum order of $20
  • Creative; Large variety of special rolls
  • Combos available
  • Popular to locals
  • Not traditional Japanese sushi; their sushi is more Western mix Japanese

  • Limited seatings; Despite there is a sushi bar, they seldom open for customers. It is mainly used for organizing their take-out orders.
Hiyashi Wakame (Fresh Seaweed Salad)-3.5/6
  • $3.50
  • They gave us a generous amount of it! EU and I love seaweed because of its crunchy texture!
  • It's a bit dry, but is still taste-wise.
  • Nothing to shout about; I'm pretty sure all seaweed from every restaurant are pre-made.
Edamame-4.5/6
  • $3.50
  • This is also one of my favourite dish. I order it almost every time I dine at a Japanese restaurant.
  • Surprisingly, Asa gave us a generous amount of edamame! I like it.
  • I think they added a bit too much salt on top of it.
  • Again, this dish had nothing to shout about. It's simple, and delicious ;)
Wild Sockeye Salmon-4.5/6
  • $11
  • We saw this was on their special menu, and given the fact that I'm a huge Sockeye Salmon fan, we decided to give it a try! It came in gorgeously-orangey colour. Hmm...looks good.
  • The texture was good! It was neither too tough nor too soft; I could gently bite them into pieces and enjoyed it slowly. Yum!

They do have a large variety of special rolls. EU and I spent some time reading every description, and at last, we decided to have...

Genki Roll-4.5/6
  • $11
  • Eel, crab meat, cucumber and avocado topped with smoked salmon. Served with seaweed salad.
  • I was pretty surprised by their amount of crab meat because normally restaurants try to stuff as much crab meat as possible to make the rolls look bigger. Anyway, all ingredients tasted alright.
  • The fillings were not equally divided in each roll. I mean some of them had more crab meat, and some had bigger pieces of eel.
  • I found the eel was a bit too soft (over-handling maybe?).
  • Another surprise! EU and I both thought they were going to put the seaweed on top of the sushi; however, they gave us a generous amount of seaweed salad in the middle of the sushi. Well, that's ok. We could take the amount of seaweed we want to go with the sushi ;)
  • Maybe because they had added some sauce onto the seaweed, it was softer than the side dish we ordered.
  • We wonder maybe the "smoked salmon" is the sockeye salmon. They tasted exactly the same, and it did not have any smoky flavour.
Oyshi Roll-4/6
  • $6.95

  • Crab meat, avocado, cucumber and cooked tuna topped with smoked salmon.
  • For some special rolls, like this, you can choose either spicy or not. We opted for the spicy one because I'm also channeling some spicy food recently. But I was surprised that EU didn't mind ordering the spicy one because she does not like to eat spicy food normally.
Ok, so I thought some of the ingredients might be spicy. However, none of them was; the spiciness actually came from the sauce!
  • The sauce can be a bit more spicier.

  • Surprise again! EU and I thought the "cooked tuna" would be the canned one, like the island roll we had at Sushi Garden. However, Asa actually used the real tuna! The cooked tuna here is tuna tempura. It was a bit hard and dry though.

Even though Asa Sushi's quality is not really good, their creativity and portion are really worth a try. We will definitely come back and try more special rolls! They have too many rolls, I really need some time to more! ;D
